A Child Grows In Brooklyn: Astrology Reading Results

Rena, reporter/mama in Ft. Greene, offered to test out a local astrologist so that the rest of us could get a taste of what a reading by Park Sloper Kevin Uehlinger is like. She called me right after her reading and said in one word, "fantastic."

I entered my astrology session with Kevin Uehlinger with loads of questions and slight apprehension. I knew that most of the friends and family chuckled when I mentioned that I was going to do this session, but I was curious.

Prior to our meeting, Kevin explained in an email that what you gain in a session depends on how much you want to know.

If you have specific questions or concerns about things happening in your life, astrology can address them. Kevin does not answer questions like "how long will I live?" or anything like that, nor does he answer any questions or inquiries that transgress ethical boundaries. He specializes in helping people to deal with relationships, and questions of "life purpose" or vocation, or any area of self-development. The most useful aspect of astrology is to determine the "right time" to do something; the idea that "for everything there is a season." People often ask him whether now is a good time to move, invest, get married, etc. By looking at the birth chart, he sees what kinds of transitions are occurring in your life right now, and during the session he can delve into the specifics of whatever you want.

My session with Kevin was to learn about the basic nature of the archetypes in astrology and how they work. He gives a basic session that simply highlighted the different archetypal forces in my life and how they relate to my personality and experience.

According to Kevin, “this would be a general overview of your birth chart and is usually what a first-time client desires, unless there is a pressing question at hand. I emphasize that in my practice, I do not put value judgments on the archetypes. I am not going to tell you that you are "cursed" or whatever with bad karma in this life or anything like that! I'm here to present the archetypal material in a non-biased way and help you understand what it means for you, to maybe help you figure out why something is or isn't working well for you. For this reading I also write up a 4-5 page summary that you can read over later. “

Kevin also does readings for your baby. I did not opt for this. He noted that this session does not include whole-life predictions like some traditional astrologers do. He finds it useful to simply look at the baby's chart in comparison with the parents', and highlight areas of life that might prove to offer some challenges, so that the parents can be ready for them. Kevin wrote, “for example, say two parents are very "Earthy" in the elemental balance of their charts. This means they are practical and conservative. If they have a child who is heavy in the Fire element, they have a little adventurer and rebel on their hands! What you will find as a parent is that children are not "blank slates" when they come into the world. Astrology is useful for helping parents to understand that there are some aspects of their children's personality which they should learn to work with and respect, rather than seeing them as problems which need to be fixed. The same goes for relationships between adults. The goal of my practice is to help people have greater and deeper understanding of themselves and others, to be realistic about what we are capable of ourselves and to respect and honor the differences in our loved ones (and enemies!)”

So with all this information, I met Kevin on a Saturday morning in a Park Slope coffee shop. For 90 minutes Kevin talked about how the alignment of the sun, moon and planets on May 8, 1965 impacted my life in the past, today and into the future.

He began the session by presenting me with a well-drawn astrology chart that corresponded to my birthday. Kevin is very well-spoken and has studied this art-form for the past seven years. His presentation was very thorough and at times I felt an emotional surge – recognizing that some of his comments were right on the money.

My birthday’s moon sign is Leo, which is a fire sign. This fit me fairly well. My rising sign is Capricorn, a sign for stability and practicality—something which I am now in the midst of with a young baby.

For the next hour and half Kevin presented the story of my life how siblings, husband, work and family impacted my life. He gave key months to look forward to in terms of positive energy and in terms of change and challenge.

It is not a science, Kevin said but rather a “blueprint of my energies” that affirm what you might suspect or felt intuitively. I finished the session energized.

TIPS:

Come prepared with the time, date and place of birth for yourself and anyone else in the family whose chart you will look at.

Bring a pen and paper

Don’t be afraid to write on the chart, as I was …you do forget and don’t remember what the signs mean

You can bring a tape recorder too if you want.

Kevin offers three types of Astrology Sessions

1.Basic Astrology Session - 90 minute session for $100 includes:

1) Face-to-face session
2) Hand-drawn astrology chart that corresponds with your birthday
3) Typed, four-page assessment of how the sun, moon and planets were aligned the day you were born and how this corresponds with you past, present and future life.

2. Health and Physical Constitution Session for $150 - a more involved session, hence the extra fee of $50… Look at health concerns, and do a consultation around your diet and general habits to determine what kind of lifestyle would best suit your elemental constitution.
