Subway and Buses for Kids

Subway and Bus Transport to School
Eligibilty for Transportation
Grades K-2 living less than 1/2 mile from school: half-fare on public transportation.
Grades K-2 living more than 1/2 mile from school: yellow school bus or free public transportation.
Grades 3-6 living between 1/2 and one mile from school: half-fare on public transportation.
Grades 3-6 living more than one mile from school: yellow school bus or free public transportation.
Grades 7-12 living between 1/2 and 1 1/2 miles from school: half-fare on public transportation.
Grades 7-12 living more than 1 1/2 miles from school: free public transportation.

Some public school students are eligible for free transportation to and from school by yellow school bus or with a special MetroCard. Eligibility for free transportation is determined by a student's grade, distance from school, and academic program. To receive yellow bus service, eligible general education students must also fill out a registration form.

Subway and Bus Height Requirement
Up to three children 44 inches tall and under ride for free on subways       and local buses when accompanied by a fare paying adult. Infants (under       two years of age) ride express buses free if the child sits on the lap of       the accompanying adult.
