They always have lollies, cookies and other treats for kiddies in the waiting area. "Weekends are a bit busy so kids won't be able to spread out their coloring books as easily as they can during the weekdays. We have moms and dads requesting all sorts of hip do's and our stylists can accomodate. We've overheard "can you cuy my son's hair to look like Beck?" Can you color a strand Barney Purple? We can add colorful extensions for fun. We also do teen facials at our spa which is located around the corner from the salon. They are $55 and we have great Dermalogica products for kids with teenage acne." $25 for children's haircut.
Birch and I entered the Beehive Salon in Williamsburg where all the other clients were adults hanging, either with funky colored weaves or just sharp haircuts. However, Birch got all the attention from both the clients and the shop. Andrea, who specializes in working with children, escorted Birch to her station and swept a Harry Potter cape on top of him. She seated him on a booster seat and calmly showed him her "tools". Then she was at it, quietly snipping. He squirmed and cried for me as he wasn't too sure of a new person cutting his hair so Andrea kindly let me hold him in my lap while she cut his hair with his head buried in my chest. She was obviously used to dealing with this. Somehow she managed to still cut his hair with confidence. Eventually, Birch got comfortable and turned and looked in the mirror and actually smiled! Afterwards, he wanted to sweep up the hair with the salon broom (he has a fondness for sweeping)- and Andrea and Birch swept the entire shop. He had a blast. It was a real outing and I didn't need to buy a toy or distract him with some other kind of media. There was so much to see on the walls of the salon that that was interesting and unique (see top photo). The Beehive isn't a "kids salon" per se but certainly is kids' friendly for little ones and is a cool place for kids who want weaves, quirky East Village cuts and a "vibe." The parking was easy. $25 for a kids' haircut. Their website has a price list for other services.

All ages, lots of toys (including ones for sale), they also do adult hair cuts, bangs, up do's and braids. All children leave with balloons and lollipops. They have individual tvs for kids to watch a DVD of their choice as they sit in one of the three children's barber chairs, surrounded by toys and helpful salespeople. LuLu's has been catering to kids with special needs for six years now, of course it is always best for families with a child with special needs to come in on a weekday.
This is probably one of my favorite places to get Birch's haircut. His haircut from this salon lasted the longest and kept its shape the longest. Also, he enjoyed watching the constant bustle in the toy store and salon- it provided distraction and entertainment while waiting to get his hair cut and while getting his hair cut. They have a basket of toys that children can play with which helps to divert them from wanting the new toys that surround them. The biggest caveat to this place is that it gets very crowded and never feels relaxing or mellow. It can be a hectic haircutting experience then. I would definitely advise going before school lets outs and on weekdays.

Brooklyn, NY

Children can sit in a car, watch a video, play games while getting their hair cut. If you are waiting, your child can watch movies, play the latest video games and toys. They do up-dos, a special for twins (on Wednesdays), polish manicure, french braids, corn rolls, fish tails, starlet parties and theme parties, portrait packages and even party planning! Whew! They will also do adult haircuts. They do a "Baby's First Hair Cut"- for babies under 2 years which includes a diploma and a lock of hair.
We went here very last minute. I called them from 8 blocks away and got an appointment. The shop is small but outfitted with toys and Sponge Bob tvs, cued with age- appropriate videos. The walls are stacked with nice quality toys (puzzles, kits etc) , so Birch gazed and pointed at those longingly. When he whined for one, the hairdresser brought him one for distraction. Soon he had a whole fleet of cars in his lap. The only problem was leaving without one. Meanwhile he dodged the water spray bottle and shears. However, she managed to get his haircut done with patience and was nice enough to let us chill in the waiting area and eat our lunch. I prefer the atmosphere at Lulu's for a toy and haircut place- it seems to be bustling and friendlier somehow. UPDATE: his haircut shape from here didn't last as long as I would have liked.

Michaella Williams

Clinton Hill
I recently got my haircut by Michaella Williams at her salon, Salon 718. It's a really cute space, basement of a brownstone. She is a Clinton Hill mom and takes clients by appt only. She caters to moms by offering later hours if need be. I brought my 8 month old with me and she didn't mind at all - so if your child is still somewhat content in the stroller this is an option as there is no space to play. She's been in the industry for over 15 years, does all types of cuts, coloring, and treatments...and charges a decent price!
